technical update

January 18, 2007

Hello everyone!

I’m still tweaking the site…I’ve decided to have a very simple theme for this blog cosmetically;  it does take more  time to arrange the sidebars than I thought.  I want to give it a clean look before I begin posting anything of substance, so hang in there!

Flame Warriors

I took a lot of inspiration from the Flame Warriors site for this blog, and the clever artwork that is there. It kinda flows with the general spirit of the site.

Ironically, though, I don’t want this site to be about flaming.  I hope to host honest debate here and ….well….I’ll reveal a little more later 😉

Update: Testing drop boxes:

  1. No flaming? Crap.
btw: Google Adsense won’t work with WordPress. They don’t permit javascript in the sidebar. If they did, I might upgrade my site and they would make some money on the deal.

  2. I’m trying to get the LGF headlines to work? Have you tried?

  3. oops…didn’t mean to put a ? in that first sentence lol

  4. No, I didn’t. But if you see the word “javascript” in the code, at all, it won’t work. From what I see, you have to purchase your own domain (about $7-10/month) to be able to tweak the code.Which I’m going to pass on, for now.

  5. Yeah, I just checked, LGF headline has javascript.

Don’t bother trying. I’m not sure I want to stay with WordPress. Esthetically nice, but crippled.

  6. Maybe we could request Charles to write something that is WP friendly. That ain’t asking too much, is it? lol He doesn’t have regular RSS feeds? argh. It’s not that important to me, but I thought it would be neat.

  7. Maybe we could request Charles to write something that is WP friendly.

Nope, it’s a fatal flaw in WordPress. I know why they’re doing it, and they’re probably correct for the market they serve. I would say, and this is free advice, if you ever want to earn some small return on your investment in time and effort in a blog, not to mention the cost of computer and hard drive storage and fast Internet access, software, digital camera, scanner, etc., set up an account with Blogger. I won’t give you the exact numbers you can expect, but I was #6 in WordPress blogs recently and it would have been worth 40k/year on the traffic it was generating. It really wasn’t that tough. Instead, I got .00
I’m chalking it up to a learning experience. Your choice. But getting a small check once in a while versus nothing, I’m seriously considering choosing the small check. (Feel free to delete this comment)

  8. eh….I’m not really doing this for money. It’s more of a hobby. After all, who gets any return on an investment of 1000 posts onto a blog like LGF? No one. I look at it as fun and educational.

I guess I’ll see how this goes. It’s not like I can work on this thing full-time like most of the big bloggers out there. If, by some miracle, I manage to get good at this, I’ll probably consider getting into all that. For now, I think this is fine. We’ll see.
