Mission Creep

July 14, 2007

First, from wiki:

Mission creep
the expansion of a project or mission beyond its original goals, often after initial successes.[1] The term often implies a certain disapproval of newly adopted goals by the user of the term. Mission creep is usually considered undesirable due to the dangerous path of each success breeding more ambitious attempts, only stopping when a final, often catastrophic, failure occurs. The term was originally applied exclusively to military operations, but has recently been applied to many different fields, mainly the growth of bureaucracies.

Then, take a look at the excellent post over at Think Progress: The Ever Changing Definition of ‘Mission’ In Iraq

Let’s summarize:  Saddam is dead, the WMD’s are gone, Iraq is sovereign, elections were held…and then today, this: Iraq PM: Country Can Manage Without U.S.

Are we there yet?

  1. I remember something from one of his ministers a few days ago about how they needed the US. Oh well. I think we should pull back to Kurdistan and let the Iranians show them human rights, Ahmedinejad style, if they’re going to be like that.

  2. We need to bring our troops home now!

  3. What is this bull-crap ‘we need to bring our troops home now’?

Talk about a bumper sticker. Hell, our troops haven’t been “home” in over 60 years! They’re spread out all over the globe doing jobs that no other country will do…like undocumented workers.

“Bring them home”…boy, that’s about the stupidest Lefty thing I’ve ever heard.

  4. Chen:
2 months ago The Iraqi Parliament voted that the U.S. should leave.

Bush and Mitch McConnell both said before and after the vote, “if the Iraqis tell us to leave we will”

I guess they both missed the “leave Iraq” memo.

  5. Well, nytexan it was slightly more complicated than that (they signed a petition calling for a ‘timetable’), but yea.

  6. Yeah, I didn’t want to go into the entire mean nothing vote. I just thought the long of the short of it would do.

  7. Maliki said today that we should leave. This time I think he’s serious.

  8. I shall afford will disagree
