Obama’s Kung Fu Is Strong

February 29, 2008

Well, there I go again; using kung fu as a metaphor.  I can’t help it today, ’cause there’s just no other way to describe what happened.

First,  The blogs were buzzing about this lame and overly dramatized ad that featured Hillary Clinton as a woman who apparently never sleeps (or, at least, never puts on pajamas) and is able to answer a ringing phone at 3am.   I know what she was trying to get across with this thing (that only she has the experience to handle whatever terrible news that phone call may bring), but I’m not sure it’s really going to work.   Maybe this was the “kitchen sink” we were promised.  I dunno.  Half the blogs thought this would be a better ad for McCain to run.   All I know is that the ad got a lot of attention and reaction on both sides of the spectrum today (complete with some Matchbox 20 references), and there seemed to be an air of anticipation for Obama’s response.  Whether that perceived need was borne from the effectiveness of the ad or simply the hype that surrounded it, I’m not sure, but it was there.

Well, we didn’t have to wait too long.  Within hours:

I don’t think these ads will work this time because the question is not about picking up the phone. The question is, what kind of judgment will you exercise when you pick up that phone. In fact, we have had a red phone moment; it was the decision to invade Iraq.

Senator Clinton gave the wrong answer. George Bush gave the wrong answer. John McCain gave the wrong answer. I stood up and I said that a war in Iraq would be unwise. It cost us thousands of lives and billions of dollars. I said that it would distract us from the real threat that we face, and that we should take the fight to al Qaeda in Afghanistan. That’s the judgment I made on the most important foreign policy decision of our generation.

and…

A reporter asked whether Clinton should drop out after Ohio and Texas. Obama adviser Richard Danzig responded:

“I would encourage you on March 5 to call Sen. Clinton at 3 a.m. and ask that question.”

Ouch!  And most impressively:

You saw that right.  Obama came out with a rebuttal ad…the same day!  Apparently Obama has taken the criticism that he is dangerously slow to counterattack to heart, because I think even the Obama-haters out there would have to find that impressive in and of itself.   That phone rang, and Obama answered.  While Hillary’s camp was spending $100,000 at the deli, Obama was obviously putting together a pretty good team (a quality that would also reflect well on him as president).

Exit question:  Can we expect the political warfare to continue to be fought on the battleground of youtube.com?  The “1984” vid may be revealing the tip of the iceberg.  With a relatively small but competent staff of video editors and sound mixers, a candidate could crank out stuff like this a few times per day.  For free.  The only danger, I suppose,  is the more you put out, the less control you’d have over the message.  This would increase the likelihood of something coming back to bite you in the ass.  But with a well-oiled machine, these kinds of instant rebuttals can be quite powerful and effective.

  1. For the YouTube bit, yeas. The candidates are under the illusion young people will be voting so they need to communicate on “their” level.
The ad. It would be better for McCain. Obama can’t set the way back machine.Obama wasn’t around to vote for the invasion.Obama is slick and it’s gonna catch up to him. The blogs were abuzz about the NAFTA/Canada thing. His wife keeps opening her mouth, she’s the next Billy Carter. The fear that criticizing Obama will be seen as racist will run it’s course by Novemeber.Obama doesn’t have enough Kool Aid mix to get through. You are a good supporter for Obama I won’t knock you Chen.

  2. The Obama Campaign and the way they’re running it shows they’re ready to run this country. Hillary’s campaign? Not so much! It’s just 1990’s dirty politics which is what rational Americans (democrats, liberals, and rational republicans) are sick of.

Obama’s comebacks to Hillary & McCrazy are priceless. He did make a comment about Hillary’s 3am ad in effect (paraphrasing), “The phone rang…and they gave the wrong answer to the question”! Loved it. 🙂

  3. It also cracks me up how the neocons are reacting to the Obama supporters by calling us cultists. Oh please! Who are the jackboot lickers of our country who would support George Bush if he sliced the throat of a child on national tv by saying the child moved and it’s the child’s fault? Oh that’s right! The Bush Regime Cult! These assholes have ruined our country’s reputation in the world and it’s why Georgie needs 5,000 Secret Service to protect wherever he goes.

Obama is a light to our country right now. His voting record may not be perfect, but at least he’s not a DC Insider who wants to tear down our country like the Bush Regime, the Clinton, the McCains, and the rest do!

My sentiments to a T Kay.

in2thefray, actually, the youth vote is coming out in a big way, and Barack Obama is playing a huge role in that. So I think youtube is a great campaign tool. Especially when you consider the cost to boost ratio.

    Chenzen,
His response time is pretty damn impressive. If he keeps that up the rest of this campaign, I think it will *really* help him make gains among undecideds.

  5. Let me do my full disclosure bit first. I’m not a McCain supporter and since I live in a blue state that’s ok.I’m also not a neo con.I will throw this out there to the haters though. You all know neocons are actually related to American Socialists right ? Anyway at Dan

In the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections, young voters between the ages of 18 to 29 represented only 17 percent of the electorate, according to ABC News exit polls.

In the 2006 midterm election, young voters, ages 18 to 29, voted for Democrats by a huge 60-38 percent margin, compared with 55-45 percent in 2004; it was the best showing for the Democrats since 1986.

However, young people represented only 12 percent of the electorate in House races in 2006.

Energy, noise and the votes they do offer shouldn’t be ignored but they’re hardly the straw that’ll break any backs.
@ Kay ,blockquote>Obama is a light to our country right now. So true. He’s like the light on a locomotive that’s coming to plow you down and you are jacked by the light like a deer. You’ll never know what hit you, your community and your wallet.

  6. K I also have to add this. You offer some insight to your own query re: the cult moniker. “A light to our country”. “Heal our soul”. When Huckleberry or Dubya spoke like this the Left had a freakin stroke.

  7. Part II:

Competence trumps politics: Barnstorming Obama plans to pick Republicans for cabinet

Of course, I’m sure that there are those who will call Lugar and Hagel RINO’s anyway, but I suppose this ideal certainly represents a positive “change” in my book.

  8. Well I doubt the credibility of the offers and the intent to accept.I would agree people will fly the RINO flag.Couldn’t McCain outmaneuver Obama by courting the “gang” he’s actually more aligned than Obama. Last thought I know the candidates have to play to the extreme bases during the primaries. The thing is BO record shows he’s no centrist.
