I’m Losing It (MPG’s That Is)

September 17, 2008

Not sure what’s going on here.

Perhaps I’m slacking a bit in my driving habits.  Or, I should probably check that performance air filter (I cleaned it back in May, right before I started tracking this stuff).   Another possible explanation could be the decrease in ambient temperature, as it’s starting to cool down here in MN.

All of the above?

Whatever it is, I’ve noticed a pretty steady decline in my MPG/tank since I peaked it at 32.507 in mid-July.  Today’s fill-up revealed a tank that hit a disappointing 29.88.   “Slow and Low” is a little off her game:

Here is my cleanmpg.com mileage log.

I’ll double-check tire pressure tomorrow, just to make sure.

  1. General,

Where, where, where is your in-depth analysis and critique of Sarah Palin? Since I refuse to watch that kind of crap, I need you to break it down for me so I can know just the opposite happened. 🙂 Just giving my buddy a hard time.

    Though no road scientist, I would think you ought to be getting a little better gas mileage at a lower ambient temperature, though the difference probably miniscule. Not at a higher temperature – unless you’re warming the motor longer. Density of the gas is a little greater the cooler the temperature (because the atoms pack a little more rigidly) and because most gases operate more efficiently at lower temperatures. Maybe their dumping a little McDonald’s MN biofuel in your tank and calling it gas? {chuckle}

I’m probably guessing in one of your self-induced comas thinking about Obamessiah and his greatness, your foot is getting heavier? Maybe it’s the your nervousness of the Messiah’s drop in the polls? Maybe it’s the excitement of listening to Sean in the morning making the foot heavier? The beauty of Mrs. Palin? ad nauseum…

  2. damn, my proofreading gone to s***

  3. Chen-
I would check to see if there’s anyone hiding in the trunk.

As for the interview, it’s about what you would expect. “Golly, we really ought to do what’s right and make sure nobody does what’s wrong!”

I’m very confused about her response to the tax question. I’m not clear on how marginal tax rate cuts fiananced by deficit spending while keeping lower-income tax burdens the same makes sense for anyone but the very wealthy (e.g. less than 5% of the population.)

He’s essentially proposing deficit-financing so he can afford his tax cuts, and then he talks about earmark spending being wasteful? I don’t see how those two hang together. Not defending ear-mark spending, but at least the voters get something in return for that, right?

  4. I would check to see if there’s anyone hiding in the trunk.

Frankly, I’ve always been of the opinion General Chen has got a lot of bodies hidden in his trunk.

  5. Sorry about this lame thread gang. Before long, I’ll have the winter beater out, and we’ll see what I can do with that one.

    Tex-

From my fellow nerd hypermilers, you’ll see that the ambient temp does in fact effect the MPGs (see the link). I’ve also noticed that other weather conditions like rain will cause me to lose a few points as well (more rolling resistance, damp air).

  6. I can’t believe no one’s said it …

Apparently, they have more self-respect than I.

Have you checked your tire pressure?

    :Dodges flying objects:

  7. It’s in the thread Wickle LOL

So I was right. There you go – there’s your solution. Put the car up until winter and jog to work while the weather is nice.

  9. Hey guys,

So take this survey and find out about this awesome new product idea. It is a device that will help you improve your driving habits and increase your MPG.
